Sixteen faces, none of them readable

Overview

Behind the Mask was created as a digital illustration series exploring identity and concealment. The concept behind the work was to examine the versions of ourselves we assemble for other people, treating the mask not as a disguise put on in the moment but as something built deliberately and worn in public. By reducing the face to flat geometry and withholding the features that would make it readable, the series asks viewers to sit with what is hidden rather than what is shown, in a way that feels confrontational and quiet at once.

The visual language of the series focuses on saturation and reduction. A vibrant red field, bold geometric shapes, and hard-edged vector forms create images that feel graphic and immediate, closer to a poster than a portrait. Each face is assembled from a limited set of repeating elements, so the pieces read as variations on a single figure rather than a cast of different people. The result is a body of work that feels bold yet withholding, allowing the question of what lies beneath to remain the primary focus.
